How To Be Successful in 2012

Have you determined yet what will be the deciding factor in whether or not you will be successful in the year 2012?  As goals are set for the new year, some examples would be If I get 100 new clients this year I will be successful”, or “If I increase my income by $10,000.00 I will have a successful  year”.  Of course, these are worthy goals.  But as I look at people whom I believe to be successful, it appears that they have something more that just goals.  They have passion.  They have an inner “drive” that makes them keep going, keep working, keep going until they get where they want to go.

I’m thinking of Henry Ford.  What was his driving force (no pun intended) behind his work?  Was it for the money?  Was it for fame?  Was it to prove something to the world?

As I look forward into the new year of 2012, one of my “goals” is to change my perspective and motivation.  I think perhaps when we work toward making the world better and our drive is truly help others, we become successful in spite of ourselves.  I’ll let you know in December.  In the meantime, my challenge to myself is to work at helping people live a better life by having the insurance coverage they need to protect their families.  Anyone want to join me?

http://platform.twitter.com/widgets/hub.1324331373.htmlI have mentioned before that I don’t like change.  I am starting to realize however, that change usually involves learning of some sort.  And learning is a GOOD thing.  My wife loves to learn new things.  She says it keeps her from being bored.   I ran across a quote by Anthony J. D’Angelo that says “Develop a passion for learning. If you do, you will never cease to grow.”   I think perhaps that’s a good attitude to adopt when you are in business, and especially if you are the owner of a business.  Learning IS a good thing, and it keeps you moving, keeps you motivated, keeps you working toward the goal.

I am not an expert on Social Media yet, but I’m at least working on it.  I have even taken the next step and actually contacted one of my connections on LinkedIn and have started a business relationship with him that I think will be beneficial to me as well as my agents.  Maybe this Social Media thing will work even for me; someone who doesn’t like change.

Selling Insurance isn’t Just About Making Money – It’s About Helping People

As an Independent Insurance Agent do you ever hear “I can’t afford it?”  Most people have two reasons for not having the insurance they need to protect them and their families.  It’s either because they put it off and think they have plenty of time to get it done, or because they think they can’t afford it.  And from experience if they THINK they can’t afford it, they probably can’t, so it’s the first thing they drop when things get tight.

So teach them how to afford the insurance they need.   You don’t have to be a financial planner, just guide them on how to set aside money for the insurance they need.

When my wife and I first got married, the only thing we ever fought about was money.  You see, she pays all the bills, both personal and for our business.  She was in a constant state of frustration because of our finances.  She knew there had to be a better way so she designed what we call The CFO Tool.  We’ve used it for about four years now and we no longer fight about money.  We simply don’t make any financial decisions without looking at the tool.  You can find out more information about The CFO Tool at her website:  http://www.getfinancialcontrol.net/ but the bottom line is that we incorporated the amount of insurance we need into The CFO Tool.  We make it part of our spending plan.

Selling insurance is not just about making money.  It’s about helping people.  It’s about helping individuals and families afford the coverage they need when tragedy strikes.  It’s about helping them gain the peace of mind that comes when they know if something bad should happen, they and their family are protected.  So help yourself by helping your clients.  Show them how to make purchasing insurance a part of their spending plan.  Everything in life is about perspective.  Do your clients (prospective clients) think you’re trying to sell them insurance and make money off of them, or do they know you care enough about them to sell them the coverage they need?

Finding the Remedy

The quote by Henry Ford – “Don’t find fault, find a remedy” is one of my favorites.  How many of us know people who are constantly finding fault, constantly complaining, constantly grumbling about something?  Some of you may have employees like that.  My wife talks about when she was working in the private club industry.  They’d be in a staff meeting and after several minutes of everyone complaining, her General Manager would say “I’ve heard enough about the problem now.  What’s the solution?”   She said it was always amazing how everyone would just shut up.  They had nothing to say regarding the solution.
